Port of Ancona in Italy

Ancona is a city located on the Adriatic coast of Italy. It’s the provincial
capital of the Marche region and offers spectacular vistas and a
wonderful coastline with beautiful sandy beaches. This seaside city
takes its name from the elbow shaped promontory which originally
protected the harbour.

Cruise Ships are docked alongside the XXIX Settembre Pier at Molo Santa Maria,
Stazione Marittima in Porto di Ancona. Plenty of hotels are located
within close distance of the port terminal.

Cruise and Ferry Port

Ships and ferries approaching the Port of Ancona are welcomed by the marble Arch of Trajan, atop of the harbour wall. It’s one of the finest Roman monuments in the Marche, founded in 114-115 in honor of Trajanus. The cruise passenger terminal of Ancona is located within walking distance of the town center. Ships dock at the XXIX Settembre Pier at Molo S. Maria.

Main cruise lines operating from the port are MSC Cruises and Costa Cruises.

Savona is also a major ferry port, with connections to Greece, Croatia, Albania, and Montenegro. Ferry operators include Anek Lines, Minoan Lines, Superfast Ferries, SNAV, and Blue Line Ferries.

Several accommodations are located within close distance of the terminals. Some hotels nearby offer splendid harbour views, others overlook either the sea or the historic centre. The Teatro delle Muse theatre and train station is not far away from these properties. Both luxury 4 star and cheap hotels can be found within close distance of the port.

  • Historic sights and medieval town centre

Discover the city’s historic sights in the medieval town centre with its many monuments and old streets. The old town sits above the modern city on a hill, Colle Guasco, offering great views of the Ancona harbour and Adriatic coast.

The most obvious landmark is the 11th century Cathedral of San Ciriaco, located on the former site of the Greek acropolis. Nearby is one of the oldest buildings in town, Palazzo Bosdari, home of a small art gallery.

Also worth a look is the Church of Santa Maria della Piazza, one of the oldest churches in the city. Visit the Marche National Archaeological Museum, which has a fine collection of Etruscan vases, Greek ceramics and gilded bronze Roman statues.

Popular by tourists is a trip to Monte Conero, located directly south of the port of Ancona. It’s a protected ecological park boasting several archeological sites, abundant wildlife and perfect hiking trails.

Near Monte Conero is Sirolo, a charming sea resort with a restored medieval town centre which overlook the Adriatic Sea. Sirolo is a very touristic place with many cafes, restaurants and a pretty beach.

Popular by cruise passengers is an excursion to Urbino, further inland from Ancona and south-west of Pesaro. Urbino is a small pituresque medieval village nestled on two hills.

The highlight of the village is the Palazzo Ducale, home of the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, one of the most important collections of Renaissance paintings in the world. Urbino is also the birthplace of Raphael, the famous Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance.
