Hotels in Papeete near Cruise Terminal

Papeete is the capital of French Polynesia and one of the South Pacific’s most important cruise ports.

For many cruise passengers, Papeete serves as the starting or ending point of their voyage, making it a popular place to stay before or after a cruise.

The cruise terminal is located in downtown Papeete, close to restaurants, shops, the waterfront, and the ferry terminal for Moorea. Thanks to its central location, cruise passengers can choose between staying near the port, near the airport, at a beachfront resort on Tahiti, or even extending their vacation with a few days on Moorea.

Choosing the right area depends largely on how much time you have before your cruise and the type of experience you’re looking for.

Downtown Hotel, Resort, or Moorea?

A common question before a cruise from Papeete is where to spend your time before embarkation day.

Downtown Papeete is the most convenient option for travelers who want to stay close to the cruise terminal, restaurants, and the ferry dock. Hotels in the city centre are often within a short taxi ride or walking distance of the port.

Travelers arriving on late flights may prefer staying near Faaa International Airport, while those looking for a more relaxing island experience often choose one of Tahiti’s beachfront resorts.

Many visitors also combine their cruise with a stay on nearby Moorea. Located just across the channel from Tahiti, Moorea is easily reached by ferry from Papeete and is known for its beautiful beaches, lagoons, and luxury resorts with overwater bungalows.

  • Closest to the cruise terminal → Downtown Papeete

Closest to the cruise terminal

Downtown Papeete is the most convenient area for cruise passengers who want to stay close to the port. Restaurants, shops, the waterfront, Papeete Market, and the Moorea ferry terminal are all located nearby.

West Coast Tahiti Resorts

Best for a relaxing island stay

Many visitors choose to spend a few extra days enjoying Tahiti before their cruise. Resorts along Tahiti’s west coast offer lagoon views, swimming pools, tropical gardens, and a more relaxed atmosphere than downtown Papeete.

Two of the most popular choices are InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa and Hilton Tahiti. Both are located relatively close to the airport and provide an easy transfer to the cruise terminal while offering a true French Polynesian resort experience.

Faaa Airport Area

Best for late arrivals

Travelers arriving late in the evening may prefer staying near Faaa International Airport. Airport hotels can be a practical option for a one-night stay before heading to the cruise terminal the following day.

While the area lacks the atmosphere of downtown Papeete or Tahiti’s resorts, it can be a convenient choice for short stays and early flights.

Moorea

Best for beaches, lagoons, and overwater bungalows

Many cruise passengers choose to spend a few extra days on Moorea before or after their cruise. Located just 30 minutes by ferry from Papeete, the island offers beautiful beaches, lagoons, mountain scenery, and a more relaxed atmosphere than Tahiti.

Because ferries depart from the terminal area in downtown Papeete, combining Moorea with a cruise is relatively straightforward. For travelers looking for a true French Polynesian resort experience, Moorea is often considered one of the best options in the South Pacific.

Many visitors find that spending several nights on Moorea adds a completely different dimension to their cruise vacation and allows them to experience another side of French Polynesia.

Exploring Tahiti Before or After Your Cruise

Many cruise passengers arrive a day or two early to enjoy Tahiti before boarding their ship. While Papeete itself is relatively compact, there is plenty to see and do around the island.

The waterfront area and Papeete Market are popular places to explore, offering a glimpse of local life, fresh produce, handicrafts, and Tahitian culture. The ferry terminal is also located close to the cruise port, making it easy to visit nearby Moorea.

For travelers with extra time, a circle-island tour is one of the best ways to discover Tahiti. Along the route you’ll find lush mountains, waterfalls, black sand beaches, coastal viewpoints, and traditional villages that showcase a different side of the island beyond the resorts.

Many visitors also choose to combine their cruise with a stay on Moorea. Just 30 minutes away by ferry, the island offers beautiful lagoons, mountain scenery, and some of French Polynesia’s most famous resorts and overwater bungalows.

Whether you prefer exploring the island or simply relaxing by the lagoon, spending a few days in French Polynesia before your cruise can be just as memorable as the voyage itself.

Our Experience

We have visited Tahiti twice before cruises and experienced two very different sides of French Polynesia. On one trip we stayed at InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa, which offered beautiful lagoon views and easy access to both the airport and cruise terminal. On another visit we spent several nights on Moorea, staying in an overwater bungalow (Hilton) and enjoying the island’s relaxed atmosphere.

Both options worked well, but they offer completely different experiences. Tahiti is more convenient for embarkation day, while Moorea feels more like the tropical island escape many travelers imagine when visiting French Polynesia.

About Papeete Cruise Terminal

Papeete’s cruise terminal is located in the heart of downtown and serves as the main gateway for cruises visiting French Polynesia.

In 2025, the port opened a modern new cruise terminal building (TE ANUANUA) designed to improve the passenger experience and accommodate growing cruise traffic. The facility offers tourist information, seating areas, free Wi-Fi, and convenient access to tours and transportation.

The terminal’s location in the heart of downtown makes Papeete one of the most convenient cruise ports in the South Pacific. The waterfront, Papeete Market, restaurants, shops, and the Moorea ferry terminal are all within walking distance, making it easy to explore the city before or after your cruise.

Many itineraries throughout French Polynesia begin or end here, making Papeete a popular starting point for voyages to islands such as Moorea, Bora Bora, Raiatea, and Huahine.

Airport & Transportation

Faa’a International Airport is located approximately 15 to 25 minutes from downtown Papeete and the cruise terminal, depending on traffic.

Most cruise passengers use taxis, private transfers, or hotel transportation between the airport, their hotel, and the port. Travelers staying in downtown Papeete can often explore the city on foot, while those staying at resorts or on Moorea may need additional transportation arrangements.

Faa’a International Airport is located relatively close to both the cruise terminal and many of Tahiti’s major resorts, making transfers straightforward for most cruise passengers. This makes French Polynesia a relatively easy destination for pre- and post-cruise stays compared to many other South Pacific cruise ports.

For travelers continuing to Moorea before or after their cruise, regular ferry services operate from the terminal area in downtown Papeete. The crossing typically takes around 30 minutes.
